Nicole Marie Melton Leaves Essence Magazine as Beauty Editor

October 10, 2013

ESSENCEOctoberCover-ViolaDavis

Nicole Marie Melton dropped clues on her Instagram page last week that she was leaving her post at Essence Magazine, but was really hush hush about what her next steps was. I think she is off to Glam Media, and digital powerhouse. Which are behind some of the largest digital personalities in the fashion and beauty sphere.

It is said that she left to be a freelance writer on health and beauty topics. She’s a bright star and I am sure she will be on to bigger and better things. Who will replace her at Essence? Let’s hope it is me! LOL. No for real. Mikki holla at ya girl!

Essence had the twitter and IG all a buzz today during their #EssenceUPfront event. Panalist included June Ambrose, Iman, Afrobella, & Gabrielle Union.

BUY yourself some SWAG

September 17, 2013

Swag Pin

Here is a really cool jewelry accessory with a lot of bravado. This little pin could be worn with hello everything. Actually I may buy two. Just because it is only $18.
Get yourself one at Nordstrom.

I believe it is okay to be a little braggy and cool. This conversational piece is just that a fun little item that can be put on a blazer or worn on a blouse. Find a way to put a little whimsy in your style.

What Happens to a Dream Deferred?

August 27, 2013

It is my favorite.
Langston-hughes-bday
This Langston Hughes poem is honestly one of my favorites. In the poem, Langston is concerned about what happens after the shiny light bulb moments of a dream fades. When you are right there so close to seeing a victory and it slips away. It may be caused by things outside of our control or it may be caused by our own unwillingness to work hard and be disciplined to get what we say we want out of life.

A Dream Deferred is also the inspiration behind Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun. A broadway play that debuted in 1959, and was the reason for Phylicia Rashad’s tony award winning performance in the play in 2004. (My Thespian Honor’s Society is showing).

The Play depicts a family in Chicago who are living hand to mouth. They are working class people and the son decides he wants more and he has a plan that fails. (That was beyond the Cliff’s Notes version.)

He fails. His family is worse off that before, and so his dream is deferred. His high hopes get dried up like a raisin in the sun.

This week there is a LOT of talk about dreams. The 50th anniversary of the March on Washington is tomorrow. It is where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his historical speech about Dreams. His dreams for a nation far better than what he currently saw.

I have had a lot dreams deferred. I am sure you have too. Today I want you to dust your dreams off and put them back on the shelf of your mind. Dreams are just goals without an action plan or an end date. You can tweet that! Click to Tweet.

Your Plan of Action
Have you ever used SMART Goals to accomplish a long range task? SMART is an acronym for
Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Realistic
Timely

I want you to win. I know you can do it. There may be many barriers to your success like time, family, money, but think of how great you will feel once you’ve accomplished something you had given up on.

The #BeautyLOL I shared with Wendy McClendon-Covey

August 15, 2013

I am sure you did many a stupid things as a kid that you would totally laugh at now. I had a childhood full of laughable beauty moments. You tell them to your girlfriends or hope you mom doesn’t tell your boyfriend when they first meet. Me. I don’t care I will tell them to a complete stranger. That is exactly what I did. I told one of my old school beauty LOL moment to Actress and Comedienne Wendy McClendon-Covey. During Blogher this year I had the best time. I got the chance to meet and talk one on one with this amazing funny lady. Her love of beauty is serious. We made each other laugh.

Don’t be afraid to share your story. Tell me your beauty LOL secret I promise I won’t tell *wink*

My Beauty LOL Moment I Shared with Ulta

August 7, 2013

I filmed this video at #Blogher13. Ulta Beauty asked us to tell our most interesting Beauty Laugh out Loud stories. This one is about the time I was eight and shaved my eyebrows.

I actually got to tell this story to Actress, Comedian, and fellow Beauty Lover Wendi McLendon-Covey. I think I scared her just a little during our one on one interview.

Wendi
Those were the days before that moisturizing comfort strip you get now. This was razor to face people.
Thank God. They grew completely back, but this story has a twist.

Leave me a comment to let me know if you LOL’d or you can top it and share your story!

Terez
